Academic Update

Social Studies - we are still working on our PowerPoint presentations about a specific Civil Rights topic. Be prepared to learn about:

Ruby Bridges: Allie and Isabel

Rosa Parks: Victoria, Isabelle and Garrett

March on Washington: Dallas, Alessandra and Megan

Malcolm X: Alex and Taijhan

Math - we began our unit on measurement and are working on converting centimeters to meters, while always practicing our multiplication and division skills.

Language Arts - we are still reading the Liberation of Gabriel King and it appears as though everyone is really enjoying it. Although it may be hard to imagine a time when race relations were unharmonious, it is very easy to identify with Gabe and Frita, the two main characters who are in the 4th grade.

We are also beginning to learn about inferencing skills - how can we make a prediction about something based on what the text is telling us. This is a tricky topic!

Writing - we began exploring aspects of poetry (might rhyme, might not, might have punctuation, might not, might have a pattern, might not) in addition to styles that can make our writing POP. This includes things such as onomatopoeia and personification. Next week, visiting poet Lyn Hoopes will be here to lead a workshop with 4th grade.
