Welcome back!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to 4th grade! On Fridays, this newsletter will typically be generated electronically on our class blog as a way to reduce paper and do our part to help save the Earth. If you would like to receive a printout instead, just let me know.

September is a time of new beginnings. Friendships are renewed and new acquaintances are made. Our class of four joined with the other fourth graders (a total of 28 of us!) for a wonderful afternoon discussing pieces of the Hank Zipzer summer read. We discussed Hank’s learning circle, with items that were easy for him and items that were his “growing edges”. Then, everyone made their own learning circles. I am anticipating that next week will be just as successful as today was!

FYI

1) Every Friday the plastic envelope with your child's corrected work for the week will go home. This envelope will also be used for any interim communication from the office, so please keep a look-out for it and return it the next day.

2) The trapper keepers/cloth covered zip binders will store our homework planners, homework and any notes from music or science. Typically, homework will happen Monday through Thursday, even if it is to read for 20 minutes. Later in the year, some long-term social studies projects may need to be worked on over the weekends. Daily assignments should not take more than 45 minutes to complete. If they do, please let me know.

Something different regarding homework this year has to do with the use of Symphony and Lexia. Instead of having that be a homework component, we are going to attempt to use the first 15 minutes of homeroom (8-8:15) for that time. Students that are unable to complete their work during that time may have to do some for homework.

3) There will be times when we may need parent volunteers to help with classroom events. I would like to give you as much advance notice as possible, as I realize it may be tricky to get time out of work. For now, here is the information that I have:

November 9, 2010 (tentative) – Whaling event: The 4
th grade will display their work from their Whaling unit and perform songs and dances.

February, 2011 – Biography Breakfast, usually from 8:10-9:00.

June, 2011 – Prairie Day, usually from 11:00-2:00.

As always, contact me with any questions you may have. Email is the absolute best way to get in touch with me, as I have more opportunities to check my email than I do to get to a phone to check my voicemail.

Have a wonderful weekend! ~ Mrs. Lawless
