4th graders started a new book this week. Skeleton Man was written by Joseph Bruchac, who actually was a visiting author during AuthorFest a few years back.
Skeleton Man is based upon a Mohawk tribe legend (Bruchac is Native American). Mrs. Dias, Mr. M and myself were trying to find a good book for our new unit. Skeleton Man came recommended to us from some 7th grade students who read the book when they were in 4th grade.
Due to the fact that this is a higher-level book than Hank Zipzer, the majority of the reading will be done in the classroom. So far, we are really liking it!
Additionally, we are practicing some story mapping strategies. When reading any book with your child, feel free to ask them what the problem is that the character is facing and how it goes about getting solved.
