Read Naturally news!

This week in Language Arts, a big focus was on our Read Naturally program for fluency. A huge part of 4th grade is learning how to answer the comprehension questions correctly. There is a certain procedure that we go through to make sure that our answers are supported:

  • · Pick 3 different colored pencils
  • · Look at question 1 (main idea). Decide on what you think an answer is, then underline 3 sentences that support your main idea.
  • · Look at question 2 (fact question). Find and underline the answer in your story.
  • · Look at question 3 (vocabulary thinking question). Find the bolded word in your story and underline it. Try to figure out what it means, based on the other words.
  • · Look at question 4 (thinking question). Use the information you learned and make a smart guess.
  • · Answer question 5 in a complete sentence using at least 2 facts from the story.

As you can imagine, this is not an easy process. Typically this will be part of the Thursday night homework routine, but I want to make certain that everyone has it down pat in the classroom before they try to do it independently.

Additionally, we are working on the required to write a story retell worthy of 100 points, which can be done at home.

Do you have a complete beginning sentence? 10 points

Do you have a capital letter & punctuation? 10 points
