Whaling and Scrimshaw

Humpback Whale

Fin Whale

Dear Families,

Somebody name Albert L . Doucette came to see us today. He is a Scrimshaw Artist and he showed pieces of whale teeth that he made into art. He carved them into different shapes. He owns a store and it is in a book called “House of Scrimshaw Art.” He told us that some scrimshaw is fake. Be careful when you buy scrimshaw because some people make them out of plastic. All of the 4th graders came to the our room. There were 28 kids on our rug! Can you believe we all fit?

We know some things about whales and whaling like bones and teeth are used for scrimshaw. We are studying whales I am studying the Humpback Whale and Victoria is studying the Fin Whale. Here are two pieces of information about the whales. Did you know the Humpback Whale and the Fin Whale are endangered and they are both baleen whales?

Please post comments.
